Today’s verse is from Psalm 23:5 Here is the verse from three versions of the Bible.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. (version KJV)
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. (version NIV)
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil;
My cup overflows. (version AMP)
This verse is from the most popular psalm in the Bible – psalm 23. King David writes about the faithfulness of God.
God is always the same, unchanging in nature, whatever our life circumstances are. Here King David speaks about the banquet table, a fine spread of an elaborate meal even during the season when we are in battle and the enemies surround us.
The presence of enemies around us does not change the circumstances, does not bring in an element of rush. It’s a peaceful meal meant for joy.
The enemy would be wondering watching us enjoying an elaborate banquet in total relaxation. This may certainly be getting on his nerves.
But we can not help it. The Lord Jesus is our shepherd, we are his sheep. Our eyes are focused on him. Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace. He is our protection. He is our provision. So all that is mentioned above is default for a Christian believer even during times of war.
The occasion is made special by the Lord anointing our heads with oil. The anointing oil brings refreshing to us, it also gives us all the divine grace required for us to carry out the responsibilities at hand.
The host, our Lord, is so particular that the feast prepared should be enjoyed by us. Note the wine glass is overflowing. The love shown by the anointing oil, the abundance conveyed by the overflowing cup are reminders of the nature of the table the Lord prepares for us.
Let us be confident and excited about every day. Even when enemies surround this is the feast the Lord prepares for us.
